Yoshitomo Nara: icon of contemporary Japanese art
Step into the world of Yoshitomo Nara, one of the most influential and sought-after contemporary Japanese artists in the world. Born in 1959 in Hirosaki, in northern Japan, Nara is known worldwide for his paintings and sculptures of children with both unsettling and poetic gazes, which have become one of the most recognisable visual signatures in contemporary art. In 2019, his painting Knife Behind Back sold for $24.9 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong, making him one of the most expensive living Asian artists in the world. MTHOR curates the most sought-after pieces by the artist: collector figurines edited by How2work and Medicom Toy, prints and sculptures, all authenticated by our team of experts. Whether you're a confirmed collector or an art lover seeking your first Nara piece, you'll find here verified, traceable works shipped with the care that collector art deserves.
The story of an artist: from Hirosaki to record-breaking world sales
Yoshitomo Nara grew up in a remote region of rural Japan, marked by the loneliness of childhood, American punk-rock music and children's book illustrations. After studying at the Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts and then at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the 1980s, he gradually developed his singular visual language: children with huge eyes, sometimes laughing, sometimes menacing, who condense in a single image all the tension between innocence and revolt.
His career took on an international dimension in the 2000s, supported by exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Yokohama Museum of Art and later Pace Gallery, which represents him today. Although his name has sometimes been associated with the Superflat movement of Takashi Murakami, Nara has always distinguished himself from it, defending a more intimate and autobiographical approach. His value on the secondary market has continued to explode since 2015, and his edited figurines — often produced in only a few hundred copies — have become among the most sought-after collectible art pieces in the world, alongside works by KAWS and Murakami.
Yoshitomo Nara's visual world: childhood, solitude and poetry
Yoshitomo Nara's work is instantly recognisable through its figures of children with hypnotic gazes, often solitary, endowed with rare emotional power. Behind the apparent simplicity of the line, his paintings and sculptures explore universal themes: solitude, melancholy, silent rebellion, but also tenderness and wonder. This tension between gentleness and unease is the signature that makes his work as immediately identifiable as it is deeply moving.
Technically, Nara's figurines and sculptures are produced by the world's leading collectible art editors: How2work (Hong Kong), Medicom Toy (Tokyo), Pinpoint and Pace Editions. Three characteristics explain the value of each piece: the absolute rarity of editions (often 100 to 500 numbered copies), exceptional production quality (resin, fibreglass, ceramic depending on pieces), and signed and numbered original packaging that systematically accompanies each work. These three elements are essential for resale value and long-term preservation of your acquisition.
