Asics was founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka in Kobe, Japan. Initially known as Onitsuka Co., Ltd., the company began by producing basketball shoes. In 1977, Onitsuka Co., Ltd. merged with two other companies to form Asics Corporation.
