The story of an icon: from the INEOS challenge to the world record
The Alphafly journey began in the Nike Sport Research Lab in Beaverton, Oregon. After the success of the Vaporfly 4%, Nike's engineering team pushed the research further: the goal was to bring Eliud Kipchoge below the mythical two-hour barrier in the marathon. On October 12, 2019, in the streets of Vienna, the Kenyan accomplished the feat in 1h59'40" wearing an Alphafly prototype, becoming the first human to run a marathon under 2 hours.
A few months later, in February 2020, Nike officially released the Alphafly NEXT%. Since then, the silhouette has gone through several major iterations: Alphafly NEXT% 2 in 2022, Alphafly 3 in 2024, each refining the formula. Adopted by the entire global marathon elite (Kipchoge, Bekele, Cherono, Hassan), it has become the absolute performance standard.
A unique technology: how does the Alphafly work?
The Alphafly combines three breakthrough technologies. At the heart of the midsole, a PEBA-based ZoomX foam delivers record energy return (85%+) while remaining ultra-light. This foam encapsulates a full-length carbon plate curved like a rocker, propelling the runner forward on every stride. Under the forefoot, two Nike Air Zoom units add an extra spring effect at toe-off.
Three clear benefits: 4 to 5% running economy compared to classic models, maximum energy return on every stride, and featherweight under 230 grams that doesn't penalize on long distances.
