Bo Jackson: the football and baseball legend turned trading card game

Bo Jackson, born on 30 November 1962 in Bessemer, Alabama, is the only athlete in history selected for both the MLB All-Star Game (1989, named MVP of the game) and the NFL Pro Bowl (1990). Winner of the Heisman Trophy in 1985 with Auburn, he played simultaneously for the Kansas City Royals in baseball (1986-1990) and the Los Angeles Raiders in football (1987-1990), before a hip injury in January 1991 cut his career short. His 1986 Topps Traded baseball rookie card and his 1988 Topps football rookie card remain among the most sought-after sports cards of the 80s, and Nike's 1989 "Bo Knows" campaign turned the Nike Air Trainer into a cult sneaker.

The Tecmo Bowl connection comes from the NES video game released in 1989: the Raiders' Bo Jackson was so fast in it that players invented the "no Bo Jackson" house rule to keep games fair. In July 2024, Bo Jackson launched his own card company, Bo Jackson Battle Arena, Inc., and in November 2024 released the Alpha Edition, the first trading card game to combine superheroes, on-card autographs and game-worn jersey relics. The Tecmo Bowl Edition, the second major set in the range, pays tribute to that era with over 350 cards, pixel art parallels and 24 signing NFL legends.

The Tecmo Bowl Edition Double Mega Box contains 160 cards across 16 packs of 10, including 8 retail-exclusive hits: Endzone Fire and Ice Battlefoils, Helmet Icon Battlefoils, Big Pixel cards and Silver Coin Flip hits. Rarity follows the Battle Arena system, from the most common weapon type to the rarest: Brawl and Steel (base), Fire and Ice numbered to 50 copies, Glow to 25, Hex to 10, Gum (Secret Rare) and Super, each hero's unique 1/1 Superfoil. Inspired Ink autographs are signed directly on the card, never on a sticker, and the line-up features Bo Jackson, John Elway, Dan Marino, Drew Brees, Lawrence Taylor, Barry Sanders, Randy Moss, Troy Aikman, Dak Prescott and Puka Nacua. The 8-Bit Alt Art, Rage Quit, Halftime Alt and 80's Pixel Rad inserts, along with the "Touchdown Bo Jackson" chase card in a black variation limited to 34 copies, round out the checklist.
