Nike Dunk Low: the 1985 college basketball silhouette turned ultimate streetwear icon
Step into the world of the Nike Dunk Low, the 1985 low-top basketball silhouette and today one of the most popular and collaborated sneakers ever. Born from Nike's "Be True to Your School" NCAA program, the Dunk Low has lived four lives: 80s NCAA basketball, 2000s skate culture with Nike SB, 2020-2021 hype comeback driven by Travis Scott and Off-White, and today a global streetwear statement piece. MTHOR curates OG colorways, cult SB Dunk Lows, and major collaborations Travis Scott, Off-White, Concepts, Tiffany & Co., Patta, Stüssy — all authenticated.
The story: 1985, NCAA, skate culture and streetwear comeback
Released in 1985 under the "Be True to Your School" program, the Dunk Low gave NCAA teams (Kentucky, Michigan, UNLV, Syracuse, Iowa, Villanova, Georgetown) exclusive university-coloured sneakers. Designed by Peter Moore reusing Air Jordan 1 and Air Force 1 components.
In the 2000s, Nike SB reinvented the silhouette for skate with Zoom Air. Cult drops: SB Dunk Low Paris (2003, 202 pairs), Diamond "Tiffany" (2005), Concepts "Lobster", Pigeon by Jeff Staple (2005, NYC riots).
In 2020-2021, two historic drops triggered the biggest sneaker boom in decades: Travis Scott x Nike Dunk Low (2020) and Off-White x Nike Dunk Low "The 50" (2021, 50 colorways by Virgil Abloh).
Signature construction: Air-Sole, color-blocked paneling, gum sole
Three distinctive elements: color-blocked paneling (6 panels for endless combinations), encapsulated Air-Sole unit, and rubber gum outsole with circular pivot pattern.
Three benefits: instantly recognisable color-blocked look, exceptional styling versatility, and basketball-grade cushioning. Textile lining, 6-7 eyelet lacing, SB ID plate on skate versions.
The collection's iconic models
The Dunk Low "Panda" (Black/White) is the absolute post-2021 reference. UNC, Syracuse, Kentucky and Michigan remain cult NCAA OGs.
Major collabs: Travis Scott x Dunk Low (reverse swoosh, mocha palette), Off-White x Dunk Low "The 50" (zip-ties), Concepts SB Dunk Low "Lobster", Tiffany & Co. x SB Dunk "1837", Patta x SB Dunk Low, Stüssy x SB Dunk Low "Cherry".
