The history of Skybox: from Durham to the Tom Brady rookie card
SkyBox International was founded in 1989 in Durham, North Carolina, and released its first NBA set for the 1990-91 season, recognisable by its abstract computer-rendered backgrounds, a first on the market. The brand went on to release a string of now-cult lines: Skybox Premium, E-X, Skybox Metal Universe (whose 1997-98 Precious Metal Gems parallels rank among the most expensive basketball cards on the market), Skybox Thunder, Skybox Dominion and Skybox Impact. In 1995, Skybox was acquired by Fleer (Fleer/SkyBox International); after Fleer's bankruptcy in 2005, the brand moved to Upper Deck.
The flagship card of the collection is the 2000 Skybox Impact #27 Tom Brady, one of the official rookie cards of the quarterback picked 199th in the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, before his seven Super Bowl titles. Its value depends directly on the grade: a PSA 10 sells for several times the price of a PSA 8, which is why it matters to buy a slabbed card with a certification number that can be looked up online. The 2000 Skybox Dominion Tom Brady is the other Skybox rookie sought after by collectors.
